Hey everyone!
ReplyDeleteI read an article on Wired.com that spoke about new breakthroughs in 3-D printing. According to the website, two MIT researchers discovered a way to print large items, such as a chandelier, from a standard 3-D printer with a chamber that measures only about 5 x 5 inches. Apparently, the item being printed is designed in a chain of rings that can each be modified to snap into place with other rings. The whole chain is printed as what the website states looks like a pack of uncooked Ramen noodles. Once printed, however, the chain can be manipulated and, with specific shapes designed into certain rings, the different pieces can be snapped together to form the larger item.

Nice Annie. 3 D printing is everywhere these days. The race is on to make it more affordable and easier to do. I was at a conference on 3 D printing recently and many of the complaints were that the software just isn't that good right now. Many are using either Google Sketchup or 123D design (free CAD program for the iPad). This company will print designs for you if you don't have a printer or are having a hard time : http://www.shapeways.com/
ReplyDeleteA popular 3 D printing company just got listed on the NYSE. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2013/10/18/business/ap-us-voxeljet-ipo.html?hp&_r=1&
The future is bright for 3 D printing.
