Crazyness of college admissions

I thought this article would be appropriate for what you may or may not be experiencing in your own lives right now.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/01/opinion/bruni-our-crazy-college-crossroads.html?ref=opinion

In it, Mr. Bruni describes how the name of the college may not be as important as many people think it is. Please read and discuss your thoughts since your probably grappling with many of the issues he mentions. Is the name of the college important to you? What are other people saying?

  1. I think to a certain extent it does matter the name of the college if they help you prepare more for a job in the field you want especially because when you put it on your job applications the person considering you will look at it and know that school is a well known prestigious school. The article mentions how if you are just good at your job you will do well which i believe is true but not always the case.

  2. Personally colleges have really gotten out of hand with the whole acceptance and rejection process. Why say you have a 60-80% acceptance rate yet you reject 90% of your applicants and then complain when students don't return their sophomore year of college. I feel that the whole application process is sooooo overrated and that way to many people get their hopes up only to be rejected. Why have a moderately-difficult range of acceptance when they know that majority of the students that apply will be rejected. Many feed into the hype of a school strictly based off of its name and the kind of attention it attracts solely off of social media, he/she say, and off of public relations i.e "HomeComing". Many people are attracted to that and then get their hopes and dreams set on that particular school only to be shut down. Soooo I agree with the NY Times when they say Colleges have gotten out of hand over the years.

  3. Personally, I am not attracted to a school simply because of its name or ivy league status. Those colleges are just that: a name. There are plenty of colleges around the world that provide excellent educations that are neither as expensive nor pain-painstakingly difficult to get into. College isn't going to "make" you. you have to make the most out of college. I know people who are applying to Ivy Leagues just for the sake of seeing if they can make it. Why put that extra work on yourself? Personally, I'm looking for a school that has what I want and is financially do-able.

  4. Good contributions everyone. I think the most important thing you can get out of your college experience is the network you build for yourself. You will mature and grow in knowledge of subject matter material but without actual real world experience it is hard to properly test your skills until you graduate. Always remember that we learn as social beings. Who you surround yourself with may one day be the most important choice you ever made.
